Beyond retail environments, RVMs are also considered to be a good fit for high-traffic areas, such as entertainment venues and sports stadiums. Last year, Recycle Track Systems acquired RVM company Cycle, and that same month the company’s technology was utilized at the Super Bowl.

“A big part of [the] thesis for that deal was expanding that professional sports stadium portfolio, but also trying to diversify the customer base,” said Anwar Khan, product manager at RTS and co-founder of Cycle.

Khan quickly saw the potential for RVMs at stadium spaces, with placements at MLB and NFL events.

“Folks are given … autographs, jerseys, or signed merchandise from their favorite sports team,” Khan said, pointing out that RVMs create an avenue for consumers to physically interact with and participate in the sustainability initiatives of brands and venues that they patronize. “It’s changing the mentality for consumers.”

Some packaging companies are also working with RVM providers. This year, Ball partnered with RTS for the installation of an RVM at Copper Mountain Resort in Colorado to collect its aluminum cups. Once cups are inserted into a machine they are scanned, crushed and sorted for recycling.

Khan said municipally supported programs can be especially helpful in states where reverse vending hasn’t been pervasive in the past. He cited an RVM installation in Coral Gables, Florida, in partnership with the Florida Beverage Association. A machine was placed in the lobby of the War Memorial Youth Center, and the top recyclers were awarded benefits that they could use in their local area, such as movie tickets and meal vouchers.

“That program saw a lot of volume, because I think it was something that was so new to the community,” Khan said.

RTS and Rethink Food Announce Partnership to Prevent Food Waste and Address Food Insecurity

The two mission-driven organizations are teaming up to rescue excess food and provide meals to food-insecure families

May 31, 2022 – Rethink Food and Recycle Track Systems, Inc. (RTS) today announced a strategic and operational partnership to help divert viable excess food stock in New York City away from landfills and provide nutritious meals for the community.

Under the terms of the partnership, RTS, a leader in the waste and recycling management industry, will offer their clients the ability to send their excess food to Rethink Food, which will transform it into nutritious and culturally celebrated meals at its commissary kitchen. Meals will then be distributed by community-based organizations to food-insecure neighbors across the city.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rethink Food has provided over seven million meals to communities facing food insecurity which are distributed seven days a week across five cities (New York, Nashville, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami), and utilized 1.2 million pounds of excess and/or donated food.

Greg Lettieri, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of RTS, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “This partnership represents true collaboration between socially like-minded organizations. RTS has helped hundreds of customers reduce waste and divert materials like food scraps from landfills, and Rethink Food’s model has proven successful in using excess food from restaurants, kitchens, and corporations to serve millions of meals to people in need. Reducing waste and addressing food insecurity go hand in hand.”

“This is a clear demonstration of how innovation can ensure high-quality, nutritious food reaches those who need it without pumping more food into the food system,” said Matt Jozwiak, Founder and CEO of Rethink Food. “This program will provide a way for companies to operate more sustainably and support the communities in which they operate. We’re thrilled to partner with RTS on this impactful initiative.”

Both RTS and Rethink Food plan to begin the partnership in New York City and aim to expand it to other common markets of operation. Companies that participate will join Rethink Food’s network of partners throughout the food ecosystem – including restaurants, food establishments, and corporations – in receiving Rethink Certified designation, which indicates their commitment to incorporating community support into their daily operations to create a more sustainable and equitable food system.

RTS is a waste and recycling services provider that relies on proprietary technology and a cutting-edge sustainability vision to encourage transparency and waste reduction. RTS serves thousands of clients across the country, including hundreds of restaurants and hotels, and large office buildings, professional sports stadiums, universities, and municipalities. Recently, the company acquired Ambrosia, a Newark-based facility that repurposes food scraps into natural home cleaning solutions. In July, RTS secured $35 million in Series C Funding from an investor group led by Citigroup’s Impact Fund for sustainable investment.

In 2022, New York City is expected to roll out its new “Commercial Waste Zone” system for the hauling of business-generated trash, recyclables, and food scraps. RTS plans to service multiple Commercial Zones, and to encourage food donation through partnerships like this.

New York, New York – February 17, 2022 – Like most Americans, we New Yorkers have never been great at recycling or waste reduction. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, reports had New York businesses recycling a mere 40% of the 5.5 million tons of waste they produced per year. More realistic reports placed the figure at 9% to 25%. Residential recycling rates are often even worse.

When offices emptied out during the spring of 2020, recycling rates dropped even more as residential waste and recycling practices shifted and most of the country’s trash was generated in remote or work-from-home environments. Concerns over Covid-19 infection led to a rise in single-use materials, while increased online shopping meant a huge amount of cardboard delivered to homes.

RECYCLE TRACK SYSTEMS HELPS SHAPE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT AS EARLY MEMBER OF SWEEP STANDARD

Zero waste innovation company will work with partner organizations
to create official standard for reducing waste impact

New York, New York – December 2021 – Recycle Track Systems, Inc. (RTS), a leader in the waste and recycling management industry, today announced they have been added as early members of the SWEEP Standard – a new US-based voluntary environmental performance standard for municipal waste programs. In their role as an early member of SWEEP, RTS will work with additional companies, municipalities, and nonprofit organizations to certify organizations in their commitment to creating a more sustainable waste management and reduction system.

SWEEP Certification – created by LEED certification co-founder Rob Watson – was established to set a more actionable path towards sustainable waste management and reduction. SWEEP recognition is centered around highlighting businesses and municipalities which take a sustainable approach to how waste is prevented, collected, tracked and measured, and ultimately recycled. As with the LEED accreditation system, those who choose to work with the SWEEP protocols are given credits for each of the above categories based on the specific measurable and verifiable actions they can take.

“Being brought in on the ground floor to assist in building out the SWEEP certification is a welcome piece of recognition for our work to promote more sustainable practices within the municipalities and companies we partner with,” said Greg Lettieri, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of RTS. “We remain committed to optimizing the way waste is collected and recycled while presenting real solutions that can reduce the amount and impact of waste we produce every day. Thank you to SWEEP for bringing us on as a partner. Together, we look forward to standardizing sustainable waste management throughout the country.”

In 2018, The US generated 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste, which equates to around 4.9 pounds per person per day. It’s estimated that as little as 35% of the MSW produced in the US is recycled, and recycling can only do so much to reduce the impact of generated waste on the environment. Many champions of sustainable waste management are now calling for a shift to waste reduction practices in addition to promoting sustainable waste collection and recycling. The SWEEP certification serves as one of the first standardized definitions for what sustainable waste management means across the US, while also helping local municipalities, as well as private companies, take measurable and verifiable steps towards improving their waste management processes.

About Greg Lettieri

Greg Lettieri, CEO and co-founder of New York start-up RTS, has redefined waste management through a digital platform that emphasizes efficiency, transparency and environmental responsibility. RTS is disrupting a stagnant industry by bringing businesses and communities visibility into their climate impact with access to real-time data.

RTS offers full automation of waste services for companies and municipalities. Clients can book pickups on demand, track their service with real-time notifications and receive verification that their materials were recycled appropriately. RTS uses data to develop solutions for clients to reduce, divert and achieve zero waste. The value of the platform has been realized by clients such as the Barclays Center, the Washington Football Team and Goldman Sachs. In addition to 3,000 commercial customers, RTS has expanded its residential footprint and currently services more than 55,000 homes.

With food waste rising as the leading contributor to harmful CO2 emissions released from landfills, RTS recently entered the circular manufacturing industry through the acquisition of Ambrosia – a food waste recycling company. By taking the valuable bi-product of food waste – water – and turning it into a non-toxic and sustainable cleaning product, the company has paved the way for keeping material in a continuous cycle and making it profitable for the industry and the environment. The product, Veles, is available on RTS’s consumer-focused platform, zerowaste.com.

This award follows RTS’s announcement of its Series C funding and numerous new acquisitions.

New York, NY – Ernst & Young has named Gregory Lettieri, Co-founder and CEO of Recycle Track Systems, as an Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2021 New Jersey Award winner. Now in its 35th year, the Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards program recognizes entrepreneurs who are unstoppable leaders, excelling in financial performance, societal impact, and building a values-based company.

“It is an honor to be recognized by Ernst & Young with this prestigious award. Sustainability is an area where innovation, entrepreneurship, and new ideas are desperately needed and we’re proud to be leading the way,” said Greg Lettieri, Co-Founder and CEO of Recycle Track Systems. “While I am flattered by this award, it’s the RTS team that deserves the recognition. They work tirelessly to change the status quo on waste and recycling.”

Founded in 2015, Recycle Track Systems is committed to helping businesses and communities understand their environmental impact and put them on a path to do better. RTS’s proprietary technology provides clients real-time data to help them manage their waste away from landfill and has brought a new level of transparency to the industry. In partnership with its recycling and reuse vendors, RTS diverts tons of valuable material from landfills so they can be remade into new materials.

In addition to RTS’s CEO being named as an Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2021, the company experienced 550% growth in its residential business and tripled the number of municipalities served in New Jersey in the past year. RTS currently serves more than 150,000 residents and 2,000 businesses across the country, including Citi Field, Barclays Center, Google, Whole Foods, and MIT to name a few.

With food waste being one of the biggest contributors to landfills, RTS also recently acquired Ambrosia – a food waste recycling company. By taking the valuable bi-product of food waste – water – and turning it into a nontoxic and sustainable cleaning product, the company has paved the way for keeping material in a continuous cycle and making it profitable for the industry and the environment.

In June, RTS announced in the Wall Street Journal that it had closed a Series C funding round worth $35 million, led by Citigroup’s Impact Fund as part of its commitment to investing in American companies applying innovative solutions to help address some of society’s most pressing challenges.

New York, NY – Recycle Track Systems, Inc. (RTS), a leader in the waste and recycling management industry, today announced the closing of its Series C round of financing. Citi Impact Fund led the $35MM investment round as part of its commitment to investing in American companies applying innovative solutions to help address some of society’s most pressing challenges. The funding will be used to support RTS’s efforts to redefine materials management and develop zero-waste programs for a more sustainable future.

Previous investment rounds were led by Volition Capital and Greenspring Associates. RTS has also received an investment from Partnership for New York City, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing private sector resources and expertise to advance the city’s standing as a global center of commerce, innovation, and economic opportunity.

“To overcome the challenges posed by the climate crisis, innovation is needed. With Citi’s Partnership, we will continue to revolutionize the waste management space by focusing on the circular economy and finding ways to save waste from landfills and repurpose it for future use,” said Gregory Lettieri, Cofounder and CEO of RTS. “We look forward to working with Citi’s Impact Fund to push to support technology that enables greater sustainability and their recognition of the value RTS has brought to the waste industry.”

“RTS is challenging the status quo in the waste management industry by providing a way for individuals, businesses and communities to actively manage their waste and recycling away from landfills,” said Ed Skyler, Head of Global Public Affairs at Citi. “Our investment in RTS aligns with our broader commitments to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.”

RTS is committed to helping businesses and communities understand their environmental impact and put them on a path to doing better. To provide clients real-time data to know where their waste is going, RTS’s network of providers are fitted with proprietary technology that tracks where it is being processed and ensures it goes to the proper facility. In partnership with its recycling and reuse vendors, RTS diverts tons of valuable material from entering landfills so they can be remade into new materials.

Over the last year, RTS has successfully expanded its position in the industry with 550% growth in its residential business. The company currently serves more than 150,000 residents and 2,000 businesses across the country. In 2021 alone, RTS tripled the number of municipalities served in New Jersey and plans to continue its municipality growth across the country.

With food waste being one of the biggest contributors to landfills, RTS has also recently entered the circular manufacturing industry with the acquisition of Ambrosia – a food waste recycling company. By taking the valuable bi-product of food waste – water – and turning it into a nontoxic and sustainable cleaning product, the company has paved the way for keeping material in a continuous cycle and making it profitable for the industry and the environment. The product, Veles, is available on RTS’s consumer-focused platform, zerowaste.com.

“We believe in testing limits and challenging the status quo to build sustainable communities through responsible and innovative solutions.”

– Gregory R. Lettieri, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, RTS

April 19, 2021, New York, NY – Celebrate Earth Day on April 22 with RTS and learn ways you can engage to make a better, more sustainable planet.

Since 1970, Earth Day has been observed around the globe each spring as a day to raise environmental awareness and involve citizens and communities in creating a cleaner, healthier world. The first Earth Day occurred more than 50 years ago when a senator from Wisconsin organized a demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Today, Earth Day is recognized in 190 countries to highlight the importance of taking care of our planet.

RTS is marking Earth Day by providing several ways for people of all ages to get involved and learn about recycling and food waste. Our Earth Day web page features a host of fun and meaningful virtual activities including a video about the life cycle of a plastic water bottle, word search puzzles, and other useful resources about recycling.  Watch the lesson plan, complete the activities, take the Earth Day Quiz and get your Earth Day Expert certificate!

In addition, RTS is observing Earth Day by raising awareness about food waste and its negative impact on the environment. In fact, the United States is the global leader in food waste, with Americans discarding nearly 40 million tons of food every year. That’s 80 billion pounds of food and equates to more than $161 billion, approximately 219 pounds of waste per person and 30-40 percent of the US food supply. Most of this food is sent to landfills; food is the single largest component taking up space inside US landfills. It makes up 22 percent of municipal solid waste (MSW).

In recognizing the repercussions of food waste, RTS is promoting its timely 2021 Food Waste Guide about practical ways to tackling and solving this prominent and often overlooked issue. By working together to reduce the amount of food we waste, we are all helping to improve the quality of our environment.
