Sustainable workplaces and local champions: ‘Canada’s Greenest Employers’ for 2024 are announced

TORONTOApril 16, 2024 /CNW/ – If your organization wants to become more sustainable, start by listening to the employees who are most passionate about taking care of the planet. That’s the message from this year’s Canada’s Greenest Employers, announced this morning by Mediacorp Canada Inc., organizers of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.

“The common thread that runs through this year’s winners is that they listen to the employees who care most about implementing green initiatives and encourage them to lead the conversation,” says Chantel Watkins, assistant editor at Mediacorp. “By giving a voice to local champions, the staff members who are most passionate about the environment get the ball rolling on workplace initiatives that can make a significant difference.”

The Canada’s Greenest Employers competition is unique in that sustainability initiatives often cause a ripple effect far beyond the winners’ workplaces. At most employers, these initiatives are launched by employees who are highly engaged with green practices and policies.  A new program might start from a simple suggestion, such as instituting a ‘reuse first’ policy in the workplace to ensure as many items as possible are upcycled or sourced from recycled materials. From there, ripples from the policy bring similar changes to suppliers and customers, who discover that a more sustainable solution is possible. Employees also discuss the new green policies with one another and family members, which inspires employers in other industries and regions to implement similar initiatives.

“There are always questions when it comes to sustainability and the adoption of greener practices and policies” adds Richard Yerema, executive editor of the project. “By tapping into their most valuable resource, their people, employers can easily identify the areas most in need of attention. Whether they’re brewing beer, manufacturing automobiles, or managing a nationwide accounting firm, local champions often lead the way by recommending and implementing the small incremental steps that create greener workplaces.”

Now in its 17th year, Canada’s Greenest Employers is an editorial competition that recognizes the employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness. Winning employers, selected by editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, are evaluated using four main criteria: (1) unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether the environmental initiatives have become part of an employer’s public identity, attracting new employees and customers.

Founded in 1992, Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the nation’s largest publisher of employment periodicals. Since 1999, the Toronto-based publisher has managed the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which includes 19 regional and special-interest editorial competitions that reach millions of Canadians annually through a variety of magazine and newspaper partners, including The Globe and Mail. Mediacorp sites reach over 2.6 million Canadians each year, including its Eluta.ca job search engine that lets job-seekers find new job postings and learn what the nation’s best employers are offering.

The full list of Canada’s Greenest Employers (2024) was announced today in a special magazine published by Mediacorp Canada Inc. and distributed online in The Globe and Mail. Detailed ‘reasons for selection’ for each of this year’s winners, as well as stories and photos of their initiatives, were released today by the editors and are accessible via the competition homepage.

Purpose-driven and thriving: this year’s ‘BC’s Top Employers’ are announced

VANCOUVER, February 13, 2024 – Job-seekers across British Columbia are looking for employers that make a meaningful difference in their communities – and employers are responding with innovative programs that make a positive local impact. The best of these initiatives were recognized today as BC’s Top Employers (2024) were announced in a special magazine copublished by the Vancouver Sun and Mediacorp Canada Inc., organizers of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.

“There’s a dated assumption that meaningful work comes at a cost,” says Richard Yerema, executive editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. “Caring for your people isn’t counter to running a successful organization, it’s key. And what better proposition to attract talented individuals than to offer progressive benefits along with the ability to have a positive impact on the broader community.”

This year’s winners are drawn from a diverse set of industries, from software to engineering and the public sector, which reflect the province’s overall economy. Among the winners are organizations that are purpose-driven themselves – such as Covenant House, a provider of housing and support services to youth facing homelessness, and United Way British Columbia, a not-for-profit organization that supports people in need.

“Many of this year’s winners are keenly aware that at the root of their success as organizations is the wellbeing of their employees,” says Kristina Leung, managing editor of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. “Whether it’s enhancing coverage for mental health care or increasing paid time off to enable employees to spend more time with loved ones, this year’s winners understand that taking care of employees is a central part of every decision their organizations make.”

Now in its 19th year, BC’s Top Employers is a special designation that recognizes the British Columbia employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. Editors at Mediacorp review employers on eight criteria, which have remained consistent since the project’s inception: (1) Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. The editors publish detailed ‘reasons for selection’ for these criteria, providing transparency in the selection of winners and a catalogue of best practices for employers and job-seekers alike. The 2 competition is open to any employer with their head office or principal place of business located within British Columbia.

Founded in 1992, Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the nation’s largest publisher of employment periodicals. Since 1999, the Toronto-based publisher has managed the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which includes 19 regional and special-interest editorial competitions that reach millions of Canadians annually through a variety of magazine and newspaper partners, including The Globe and Mail and Vancouver Sun. Mediacorp also operates Eluta.ca, one of Canada’s largest job search engines, used by millions of job-seekers annually to find new job postings and discover what the nation’s best employers are offering.

The full list of BC’s Top Employers (2024) was announced today in a special magazine published with the Vancouver Sun. Detailed ‘reasons for selection’ for each of this year’s winners, as well as hundreds of additional stories and photos about their initiatives, were released today by the editors and are accessible via the competition homepage.

President and Chief Technology Officer selected for dedication to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community.

Brooklyn, NY – Recycle Track Systems (RTS) today announced that President and Chief Technology Officer, Allyn Shaw, will be honored by the Brooklyn Nets with the Jason Collins Award for Courage and Leadership at the team’s fourth-annual Pride Night at Barclays Center.

Jason Collins, the NBA’s first active openly gay player and former Brooklyn Net, will present the award on the court during Pride Night. The award honors LGBTQ individuals for their courage and leadership on issues of LGBTQ inclusion. Allyn was selected for his dedication to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in the broader community.

“Jason Collins embodies the role model many of us needed while growing up as people of color, queer or both. I’m deeply honored to accept this award on behalf of all who advocate for those who are underrepresented in our communities,” said Allyn Shaw. “Courage is the raw fuel powering the engine of positive change and true belonging. Like Jason, we must find the strength to call out inequality where we see it and hold others accountable in order to protect everyone’s right to thrive.”

“The Brooklyn Nets are proud to present Allyn Shaw with the Jason Collins Award for Courage and Leadership,” said BSE Global’s Senior Vice President of Communications, Mandy Gutmann. “We look forward to hosting Pride Night each season to celebrate and support the diversity in Brooklyn, and honor advocates like Allyn who have had such a tremendous and positive impact on our community.”

Allyn joined RTS in 2019 to oversee the expansion of RTS’ cutting-edge technology platform and focus on enabling end-to-end technology and operations, including software, data management, mobility, and communication technologies to support scalability and innovation.

“Allyn is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion who sets an example for all of us,” said RTS CEO Greg Lettieri. “He finds purpose in creating a sense of belonging that allows everyone to thrive and we’re incredibly lucky to have him on our team.”

Prior to RTS, Allyn was the Chief Operating Officer of Global Information Security for Bank of America where he was instrumental in the creation of Bank of America’s LGBT+ Executive Council and Steering Committee. He advocated for the expansion of Bank of America’s D&I Council to include LGBTQ issues and was a key player in the creation of the Global Technology & Operations LGBTQ Advisory Council.

Allyn currently serves on the board of directors at Out and Equal Workplace Advocates, and is the Out in Tech Corporate Executive Sponsor and Advisor, and Corporate Executive Sponsor for Lesbians Who Tech.

Allyn was the 2019 Legacy Award Winner at the Diversity Best Practices’ Above and Beyond Awards and was recognized by Diversity MBA as one of the world’s top 100 business leaders under 50.  Most recently, he was named to the 2019 OUTstanding LGBT+ Role Model Lists, supported by Yahoo Finance, recognizing leaders who are a powerful reflection of the incredible achievements of LGBT+ people in the business community. RTS recognized as a “Best For The World” B Corp for sustainability and environmental excellence

September 30, 2019, New York, NY—Recycle Track Systems (RTS), a Certified B Corp, has been named a Best For The World honoree in recognition of their environmental performance and sustainable business practices. Ranking in the top 10% of all B Corps for their environmental responsibility, RTS earned this honor because of their care for the planet, conscious actions and sustainable practices in the waste services industry.

“RTS was founded because it was clear that the trash and recycling industry was in need of becoming more environmentally conscious. We are incredibly honored and humbled to receive this recognition,” said Greg Lettieri, Co-Founder and CEO of RTS. “Sustainability is a core value of RTS and we are fully committed to evolving and challenging the waste industry to be better stewards of the environment.”

Best For The World recognition is administered by B Lab, the global nonprofit that certifies and supports Certified B Corporations, which are for-profit companies dedicated to using business as a force for good. Today there are 3,000 Certified B Corporations across 64 countries and 150 industries, unified by one common goal: to redefine success in business.

B Corps meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corp Certification doesn’t just evaluate a product or service, it assesses the overall positive impact of the company that stands behind it—like RTS. Using the B Impact Assessment, B Lab evaluates how a company’s operations and business model impact its workers, community, environment, and customers. To achieve the B Corp Certification, a company must achieve a score of at least 80 points on the assessment.

“We’re incredibly proud of this year’s Best For The World honorees,” says Anthea Kelsick, Chief Marketing Officer of B Lab. “These inspiring companies represent the kinds of business models and impact-driven business strategies that are building a new economy—one that is inclusive, regenerative, and delivers value to all stakeholders, not just shareholders. To that end, B Corps like RTS are redefining capitalism and showing that it actually can work for everyone.”

1,000 B Corps from 44 countries were named to the 2019 Best For The World lists, including Patagonia, Beautycounter, Dr. Bronner’s, TOMS, Seventh Generation, and Greyston Bakery. The 2019 Best For The World honorees are determined based on the verified B Impact Assessments of Certified B Corporations. The full lists are available on https://bcorporation.net/.

New York, New York – (June 12, 2018) Today, Recycle Track Systems (RTS) was recognized for creating extraordinary positive impact as a business based on an independent, comprehensive assessment administered by the nonprofit B Lab. Honorees are featured on B the Change, the digital Medium publication produced by B Lab, at bthechange.com/bestfortheworld.

RTS is honored in the Best For The World Overall list, which includes businesses that earned scores in the top 10 percent of more than 2,400 Certified B Corporations across all categories on the B Impact Assessment. The assessment measures a company’s positive impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. To certify as B Corporations, companies like RTS must complete the full assessment and have their answers verified by B Lab.

The full B Impact Assessment evaluates a company’s environmental performance, employee relationships, diversity, involvement in the local community, the impact a company’s product or service has on those it serves, and more. Honorees scoring in the top 10 percent of all.

B Corporations set a gold standard for companies using business as a force for good. RTS made the list thanks to exceptional practices for their innovative approach for waste and recycling solutions, promoting sustainability, transparency, and economic efficiency.

The 226 Best For The World Overall honoree companies come from 92 different industries and 30 countries. B Lab simultaneously released separate lists recognizing top-performing B Corporations as Best For Environment, Best For Customers, Best For Governance, Best For Community and Best For Workers, which can be found at bthechange.com/bestfortheworld. In the fall, B Lab will release the Best For The World: Changemakers and the Best For The World Funds lists.

“RTS is honored this international acknowledgement from B Corp as Best for the World is a reflection of our team’s relentless dedication and determined commitment to delivering positive impacts for people and the environment,” said Adam Pasquale, Cofounder and Chief Operating Officer. “This shared mission drives us every day to make a positive influence in all we do and hope this recognition will encourage others to do even more to protect the environment and improve people’s lives.”

New York, New York – (June 12, 2018) – Today, Recycle Track Systems was recognized for being among companies creating the most positive environmental impact based on an independent, comprehensive assessment administered by the nonprofit B Lab. Honorees are featured on B the Change, the digital Medium publication produced by B Lab, at bthechange.com/bestfortheworld.

Recycle Track Systems (RTS) is honored in the ‘Best For Environment’ list, which includes businesses that earned an Environment score in the top 10 percent of more than 2,400 Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment. The full assessment measures a company’s impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. To certify as B Corporations, companies like RTS must complete the full assessment and have their answers verified by B Lab.

The Environment portion of the B Impact Assessment evaluates a company’s environmental performance through its facilities, materials, emissions, and resource and energy use. Companies answer questions about their transportation/distribution channels and the environmental impact of their supply chain. The assessment also measures whether a company’s products or services are designed to solve an environmental issue, including products that aid in the provision of renewable energy, conserve resources, reduce waste, promote land/wildlife conservation, prevent toxic/hazardous substance or pollution, or educate, measure or consult to solve environmental problems. Honorees scoring in the top 10 percent set a gold standard for the high impact that business as a force for good can make on nature around the world.

“It is an honor B Corp has recognized RTS as ‘Best for Environment’ which is a reflection of our team’s relentless dedication and determined commitment to develop innovative waste management solutions,” said Adam Pasquale, Cofounder and Chief Operating Officer. “This shared mission drives us every day to make a positive influence in all we do and hope this recognition will encourage others to do even more to protect the environment.”

The 228 Best For Environment companies come from 72 different industries and 25 countries. B Lab simultaneously released separate lists recognizing B Corporations as Best For The World Overall, Best For Community, Best For Customers, Best For Governance and Best For Workers, which can be found at https://bit.ly/2yLmmwm/. In the fall, B Lab will release the Best For The World: Changemakers and the Best For The World Funds lists.

Additional 2018 Best For Environment honorees include: Carnegie Fabrics; People Against Dirty/Method; Rubicon Global; and Seventh Generation.

“With the rise of anger at a system that feels rigged, people are hungry for companies like Recycle Track Systems, who are changing the system by building businesses that seek to create the greatest positive impact,” says Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab. “Best For The World is the only list of businesses that uses comprehensive, comparable, third-party-validated data about a company’s social and environmental performance.
